Neuroscience vs. Journalism

There are various kinds of journalisms that shared and express different content or niches. The main purpose of journalism is to provide individuals with information they need to make the best possible decisions about their lives, their communities, societies and their government. Journalism requires investigating on the topic and enticing writing to reach an intended audience. There are ethics to journalism such principles of truthfulness, accuracy, fairness and impartiality. I am a Senior at high point university and the primary reason I am in this class is because I needed two extra credits to graduate. However from all the other two credit courses I choose to take Journalism. There are many aspects of Journalism that coincide with research in science. From investigating a hypothesis, collecting data and interpreting the results. There is a scientific process that must be followed to obtain a result. There are also rules and regulation in journalism that requires such preparation.

I decided to study Neuroscience because I find it intriguing. Connecting the brain and the body is definitely something I can stay engaged with studying. Neuroscience is rarely offered to undergraduate students which makes it even more exciting to conquer. I plan on getting a Masters in biomedical science and then attend Medical School. My aspiration in life it to become an emergency medical physician or a surgeon. On campus I have become the Assistance Chief of High Point University Emergency Medical Service (HPUEMS). It is a student run and student led organization that has EMT's undergraduate students that are pre-healthcare. In the photo the three current officers are in the front and the leadership team is in the back. There are about 30 members and the goal of the organization is to work alongside guilford county Ems to alleviate unnecessary calls to campus.

Personally I also enjoy writing, it gives a sense of mindfulness of the world around me. I keep journals, the first one was obtain after I dropped out of Appalachian State University and decided to go to Mexico to backpack for 6 weeks. My most recent journal is about the cases I have encountered in the emergency room that have impact me. Writing to me is a form of expression that brings together the personal narrative perspective into a reality. I hope to gain from this class the ability to improve my writing to a more expressive manner that is amplified to those reading. To gain understanding that journalism is act that individuals should be free to express without consequences. As well as the art of writing being a privilege, therefore no one should have the power to silence writers but instead learn that voices should not be dimmed but instead encourage in the hopes to provide enlightenment.

Writing as a career can be risky mostly because writers work for companies in which all they want their writing to be about focus on the good side of their company. I new reporting it seems as if writing is meant to be ugly, and dark. Writing for the news can essentially feel as if a big grey cloud is hanging over. Writing as a comedy job is also not all rainbows and butterflies. True writing those which is not influenced by Boss who is signing the paychecks is through self-publishing. Being a self-publish author can in terms be a way of free escape, to be able to write anything the mind desires. Those who choose to become journalism, I have respect because they write feely about issues that matter to them but are doing so in ways to bring about change while risking being force to give up their freedom. Prosecution is a real thing that journalism have a risk of facing. It's as the right to have freedom of speech does not apply to them.

As a Neuroscience major, journalism can teach me to be a better writer however not just that but to write with a purpose to make an impact. I enjoy reading research articles for clinical trials. As of now all I am gaining experience in the field of science and strengthening my writing skills. I have written organic chemistry lab reports, research articles, biology lab reports and neuroscience research. The latest I've written is a mock grant proposal on microglia activation being critical in the remodeling of synapses after an ischemic stroke. Even though it was a class assignment and it did not get published, I worked hard to mimic publication. In my opinion it was a well written research article with two experiments backed up by evidence. It enjoyed gathering the research and compiling it all together that I am encourage to preform these experiments and test the findings to eventually get published.
